engaged spirituality

“Meditation and Self-Awareness is the first step to raising consciousness. But our work is to bring that down and ground it in our day-to-day life. When we take the seeds of greater presence, patience and wisdom and cultivate it in our classrooms, our relationships, and our communities, we play our part in transforming the world that we live in. We are calling this “Engaged Spirituality” after a similar expression coined by the great Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hahn. Take a look at our activities and see how you can join us in changing the world, one mind at a time!.”

What's Next for Project Engage

  1. Food Rescue:  Our Food Rescue initiative has been a huge success and we have added more dates to the calendar! Thanks to the efforts of various members on our team, we have connected with Trader Joe's at Glenview (1407 Waukegan Rd) and they are offering us their Sunday morning food clearance (only because fresh supplies are replacing the old stock). We took a look at what they are giving away and it includes fruits, flowers, meats, vegetables, salads, bread, cakes, prepared foods and so on.  In addition, a local church in Glenview, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, has come forward to donate clothing from their congregation each week which has been added to our weekly deliveries.  It is a lot - one or two car fulls each weekend! We need volunteers to pick up the food at 9:00 am every Sunday and drop it off at La Casa Norte (3507 W.North Avenue, Chicago) and another homeless shelter close by. Think about doing this once, twice, or as many times as you can. It would take no more than a couple of hours in all. Take a friend or family member along with you since it is a lot to be picking up and dropping off. We will give you detailed instructions closer to your date. Here is the link to sign up for your Sunday good turn.

  2. Donations !  We have updated our Target gift registry, looking for items to support the youth in the LCN college program as well as women in the homeless shelters.  Take a look and ENGAGE:  Tgt.gifts/FBL-LCN

The Background

As our learning at Full Bloomed Lotus continues with the mindfulness teachings on Creating True Peace, it is becoming clearer every day that true peace for the individual is difficult without true peace in the collective. As Thich Nhat Hanh, the great Buddhist teacher says, "Happiness is not an individual matter."

We are all deeply interconnected and much of our own pain and loneliness comes from our not interacting with people suffering in our world. As we reconnect with them and work to bring them relief, we find relief as well.

With this in mind, Full Bloomed Lotus is preparing to take the teachings of compassion we learn about in class onto the field where we will practice it.   Our current work is with La Casa Norte.
